Nepal must surpass expectations to bounce back in World Cup League 2

Having drawn the  two match Twenty20 international series against the United  Arab Emirates  at home recently, the men’s  national cricket team of  Nepal is all set to play in the ICC Men’s World Cup League 2 One Day International cricket tournament taking place at  Tribhuvan University International  cricket ground in Kirtipur.

Cricket Association  of Nepal (CAN) is hosting two  rounds of League 2 series featuring different opponents.

The first series pits Nepal against the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman. Each team plays a total of  four matches with each side playing against the same opponent twice.

Following the conclusion of the  first series,Nepal takes on  the United States of America and Scotland  in the second tri-series.

The One Day International (50 overs) series is a big challenge to Team Nepal in terms of improving their standings and putting themselves back in contention for the four qualification spots  at stake. The four teams finishing at the top of the group qualify for the final round.

Nepal's  current  position is precarious as they are second last  in the table  standings. They have garnered only  12 points from 20 matches. So far they have conceded 13 and won  only 5 matches.

Their standings in the  group is a clear reflection on their struggle  and insipid performance.

They cannot afford to lose ground further in the series if they want to  keep  their qualifying prospects intact .

The  team’s overall performance  has not quite lived up to expectations in the ODI.This has to change in order for them to bounce  back and close the gap on the front leaders.

They have to turn their performance around dramatically to make the most out of their home matches by achieving maximum  points  to bolster their standings.

The team announced for the series is virtually  unchanged  from the one that played in the  Dubai tri- series against the United States and UAE in November,2025.

Once again Rohit Paudel has been handed  the captaincy and leads an experienced   and talented outfit that has the potential to deliver results .

What matters most is playing to their abilities and strengths individually and collectively to turn the tide in their favor.

They have to put in every bit of effort to materialize home field advantage and surpass expectations to be in the driver’s seat.

Given the importance of the series ,there is virtually no room for mediocrity, loose play and error prone performance.

Batter Arjun  Kumal  is the new face in the line up. He  made it to the team roster following his outstanding batting performance in the recently concluded domestic tournament PM Cup.

Experienced batter  Binod Bhandari has made a comeback to the national team  after four years, following his brilliant batting form in the PM Cup.

Bhandari and Kumal have been selected  to consolidate and strengthen the batting order that is lacking consistency and stability .

Be it batting or bowling or fielding,  consistent  performance is one of the keys to success for the team. Also they have to take their performance a notch up.

Players have to be in a positive frame of mind, razor focused, patient, disciplined, committed to continuous improvement and sustained success, coupled with relentless pursuit of success.

Nepal  open the series  against arch rivals UAE who are at the bottom of the table and take  on third placed Oman in the second match .

A winning start is necessary for them in order  to gain early momentum, boost  their morale and confidence going forward.
