2017 - Another unproductive year for Nepal football

Contrary to expectations, 2017 turned out to be nothing but a hugely disappointing footballing year in terms of development ,progress, performance and result. Nepali football  remained stagnant, uncertain and standards plummeted, hitting rock bottom. There was/is nothing to cheer about and make you feel optimistic about the present and future. On the competitive front, it was a year of astonishing listless, poor and depressing outcome. The national football  team  and  youth teams were steeped in mediocrity and failure throughout the whole year like never seen before. To put it bluntly, each team failed spectacularly when it came to  playing to their potential and delivering  the desired results.Considering their inconsistent, sloppy and  uninspiring  performance all along, they cut a sorry figure indeed. Nightmare for Nepal in international football International competitions, the cynosure  of all eyes, proved to be a nightmare for Nepal  teams.Be it the national team or y

For Nepal football more frustration, disappointment

After a short  recess, here, I am, back to get myself moving again. Not much has happened on the field  since the country was gripped by  election fever . With the political  soap opera over, things are gradually  limping  back to normal. Prior to the election, the national football team of Nepal was in action at home, however, I  was unable  to pen  my  opinion about the team’s overall performance  in a timely manner. I kind of lagged behind.  I am aware that everyone knows how Nepal performed, and what they achieved. I will tell you, it was an average performance, by and large. That said, the main bone of contention was/is, they did not concede the match. Is this a good thing or bad? You be the judge of that. In retrospect, it was an important game for both sides. For the visitors they had everything to lose, while the host had another chance to redeem some pride. At the end of the day, amidst mounting pressure Nepal was able to achieve a face saving result against group leade

Struggling Nepal face big challenge against Philippines

T here is deep  frustration  on players and fans as the national football team of Nepal  prepares  to carry on their disastrous campaign forward in the Asian Football Confederation  2019 Asian Cup qualifiers in Kathmandu. A run of defeats and sub par performances has pushed the home side into abyss. Their progress has been  hampered and cut short by poor form. They face group  leader Phillipines in yet another inconsequential home tie. Since the host has already exited from the competition, the fixture is only of academic interest.  Die hard fans are rightfully frustrated, tired and disappointed  with the path of the team. In fact, the lacklustre showing has become an ongoing  source of  frustration for them. As a result. on the eve of the third home  game,  unsurprisingly, they  appear less expectant, unexcited, unenthusiastic  and dispirited. I don't blame them. On the other hand, the visitors cannot relax or afford to become  lax because there is still plenty at stake

Nepal bit the dust in AFC Under- 19 qualifiers

Contrary to expectations, the  2018 Asian Football Confederation  Under-19  Championship qualifiers  In Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan  has turned into  an absolute debacle for  Team Nepal. The young guns underperformed and were completely overwhelmed, outplayed by the opponents. They bit the dust and hit rock bottom, losing four straight games much to everyone’s chagrin.   The manner in which Nepal performed and succumbed   against  opponents in the likes  of Kyrgyzstan (2-0), Bahrain (4-0), United Arab Emirates (1-0) and  Oman (5-0), speaks for itself. I am not overstating the fact when I say that the overall level of their performance was  quite simply unacceptable and staggering. On the field, they looked  like a  bunch of mediocre and misfits. Not only were they winless but failed to score a single goal. I hate to say, it was a dismal, uninspiring and  frustrating performance from start to finish. They struggled massively to get their game going individually and collectively, and

Big test awaits Team Nepal at AFC qualifiers

The Group “A “ 2018 Asian Football Confederation Under-19 Championship qualifiers kicks off Tuesday in Bishkek,Kyrgyzstan. Team Nepal is in the fray vying for one of the 16 spots to play in the final round taking place in Indonesia. Going into the competition, certainly, they wear the underdog tag and have a mountain  to climb. They will have to play   positive, aggressive and  free flowing  football to have any realistic chance and prove their critics  wrong The only real big question is, will they spring a few surprises ? It is a sport, therefore,we  cannot prematurely rule out that possibility. Besides, it is a talent packed  squad, however, talent alone is not enough to  succeed. When all's said and done, all that really matters is a solid, consistent field performance and delivering  the desired results. Also  it is equally important that players perform up to the mark and live up to their potential. Common sense tells us that they have to put their hearts and s

ANFA is a pathetic political club

Misery, humiliation, agony continues to pile up for the national football team of Nepal in international football. It has been much the same story for  Team Nepal lately. Another match, resulting in another failure. What a disappointment ! The most recent  setback against Tajikistan in the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Asia Cup qualifiers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan speaks volumes about the  dire straits of  Nepal football. Once again, Nepal faltered badly  and was comprehensibly beaten by the host. Contrary to expectations, they put up a  sloppy performance  marked by repeated  defensive lapses and mediocrity and  paid dearly for it at the end. There hardly was a moment in the match, the visitors stood out and looked threatening. It was a familiar sight- they struggled to work as a unit, lacked pace and physical presence to match the home side that  dominated the proceedings and enjoyed territorial advantage for the most part. To put it short,  they underperformed and

Nepal aims to salvage some pride against Tajikistan

The stake is very high for the national football team of Nepal as they gear up for the all important away fixture against Tajikistan in the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Asia Cup qualifiers. Things are looking increasingly grim for Nepal at the moment. Apparently, players are under enormous pressure to shrug off their lethargy, find some kind of form, perform well and deliver the desired result, but that is easier said and done. The math is straight and simple. A win is a must for Japanese Coach Koji Gyotoku boys who are languishing at the bottom of the group as the situation demands. They find themselves in a make or break situation and are desperate to salvage some pride against host Tajikistan. One thing is very clear, they cannot afford to concede the match.Otherwise, they exit the competition. Already they have paid a heavy price for their mediocrity and failure to capitalize home advantages against Yemen and Tajikistan. Although Team Nepal is in a relativ

Nepal’s Under-18 success brings a ray of hope

Much to everyone's  delight,Nepal’s Under-18 footballers did themselves proud by cornering glory at the recently concluded South Asian Federation Football Championship in Thimphu, Bhutan.    My congratulations to players and coaching staff for the great result. The fact of the matter is, they successfully defended the title, once again, proving they are the best and the team to beat in the region, at least. The youngsters earned success the hard way. They had to work incredibly hard to defy odds, especially after a shock defeat at the hands of Bhutan in the opener. Despite getting off to a rocky start, they managed to bounce back and come through with flying colors at the end of the day. In fact, they refused to surrender, fighting to the bitter end and  registered three straight must wins to emerge champions. It was  encouraging to see the youngsters regroup, rejuvenate, re energize and get their act together. More than anything, they did not buckle under pressure and de

Team Nepal Flops again

The national football team of Nepal blew up yet another golden opportunity to steady the ship in the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup qualifiers played in Kathmandu. The home team’s  efforts to redeem themselves went in vain, following an insipid performance, which resulted in a disappointing defeat against Tajikistan, leaving local fans hugely  dejected, disappointed, frustrated and furious by the outcome. After the umpteenth lackadaisical  performance, there is pessimism about Team Nepal’s  prospect for progress. There are no excuses for the poor result whatsoever.  I have to admit the loss came as something of a surprise to me. I expected them at least to win a point. Instead, they ended up as the losing party at the end of the day. This is another big blow to the team that has been underperforming and slacking lately. It would not be an overstatement to say that Nepal has reached the unimaginable heights of mediocrity. The latest setback has made matters wo
