SAFF Championship: A dog fight in the offing

The highly anticipated South Asian Federation Football Championship is   around the corner. The excitement   is mounting up   and gradually reaching its crescendo.  Football goers in the country   are in the grip of   football fever. As always, home supporters have high hopes despite the national team’s poor run in international football. The team under Coach Stefanowski gets yet another chance to redeem   themselves. There is one question that   has been floating around   for nearly 20 years. The million dollar question is: Can the hosts finally break the ice? And the answer is yes. I believe they can, provided they play   total   football throughout the competition. Besides, lets us not forget   a strong   team effort is a must which is a cornerstone to success. The South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC) is   in its 20 th  year but Nepal has enjoyed very little success.  Hard to believe that   the national team   is still in   pursuit of   its ma

Another chance for Nepali footballers to prove themselves

The national football team of Nepal gets yet another big opportunity to break a   20 year old jinx that   has    got them bogged down into   mediocrity. There is desperateness in the atmosphere and irredeemably   frantic   desire to succeed on part of the team. Anguished and frustrated fans have waited far too long to see   their   side   corner the elusive glory. How long more do   they have to wait? The answer is pretty simple. Just wait and see. Since the gold   winning performance in the South Asian Federation Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1993, Nepal has gone sans a championship success to date, a fact I have always reminded and keep reminding   football goers.   On the eve of the South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC), obviously, there is a common question   on everyone’s mind “Will Nepal  be able to end its international tournament drought?” Nobody has a clue or a definitive answer.  One can draw his or her own conclusion and   just hope

Nepal squanders massive opportunity in football

No question, it was a jaw- dropping defeat for Nepal in the highly anticipated final game of the 2nd Under-16 South Asian Federation Football Championship   held in Kathmandu. The shock 0-1   reversal   the home side suffered at the hands of India was a huge setback and a devastating blow. As a result, Nepal’s international trophy drought continues unabated, unfortunately. The 10,000 plus   boisterous partisan crowd braved the rain, hoping to celebrate victory but   were left dejected, frustrated and infuriated at the end of the day. I understand emotions run high among fans. At the same time, we must learn to accept defeat gracefully and respect opponents regardless of the outcome.  It is very important that we maintain civility, orderly environment and not vilify and demonize opponents. The talented 15 year old Jerry Lalrinzula from Mizoram   shattered the dreams of the hosts   after his scorching   left-footer from 35 yards found the net in the 17 th  m
