ANFA must comply with directives of FIFA

Disgraced former President of All Nepal Football Association Ganesh Thapa's latest effort to free himself from the shackles of corruption and bribery charges has gone in vain.

As anticipated, his appeal was rightly struck down by FIFA Appeal Committee, thus confirming his guilt. Despite the setback,he has not wavered or waved the white flag yet.

Instead  he appears stupidly dogged ,stubborn and continues to deny the charges. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is his last hope.

Leave alone getting a clean sheet,it is highly unlikely that CAS would even consider his appeal. Even if they do, his chances of getting any kind of reprieve is very slim.

Obviously , this is nothing but an act of  utter desperation on part of Mr.Thapa who literally plundered Nepali football , mostly for personal gains for over two decades.

Given the scale of his involvement in corruption ,bribery and abuse of power, Mr. Thapa's punishment is too little. I believe he should have received harsher punishment.

Although guilty , he has not been indicted on corruption charges by  our toothless government that  has no interest whatsoever in moving forward with the case.

Then there is  the biased , politically motivated Commission for the Investigation of  Abuse of Authority (CIAA)  headed by Lokman Singh Karki that has shelved the case citing lack of evidence.

Both  the government and CIAA have become the laughing stock  and the butt of ridicule.

Mr. Thapa is deemed as the most corrupt administrator in the history of Nepali sports, yet he remains scot free.

It is a known fact that Mr. Thapa still controls the football body. His surrogates have  kept his disgraced legacy intact and following his orders.

As a result, little has changed in ANFA when it comes to policies, management, transparency ,governance and accountability issues.

If I am correct, Mr. Thapa is still in possession of vehicles belonging to ANFA. Despite the public hue and cry, the football body  has  done nothing to get it back.

This is a gross misuse of public property, if not, I don't  know what this is. The sports apex body National Sports Council (NSC) along with Sports Ministry  have  added fuel to the fire by  maintaining silence over it.

Remember NSC had formed an investigative committee to look into ANFA, following Mr. Thapa's suspension by FIFA.

The committee concluded the investigation and  recommended a slew of measures to tackle problems in ANFA.

NSC has ignored the recommendations so far and not surprisingly it  is a smokescreen for its inaction.

I am pleasantly surprised that FIFA is keeping an eye on ANFA,which is a very good thing.

ANFA needs a fresh start , new direction and new leadership. Before that, it is very important that we clean up the remnants of Mr.Thapa's stinking legacy.

That can be done only by FIFA , and they have to do if they want to save Nepali football.

By serving an ultimatum  to ANFA to reinstate the four suspended ANFA executives and hold elections to replace Mr. Thapa, FIFA did the right thing.

Rightly FIFA has threatened to intervene, should ANFA fail to fully comply with  directives and decisions of the world football body.

Under the current situation ,FIFA 's intervention is the best course of action to safeguard the overall  interests of  Nepali football.
