Belgian in charge of slumping Team Nepal

The   national football team of Nepal is currently going through its worst phase spanning over two decades. The team has fallen to an all- time low in the FIFA rankings. There is no indication that it is making a comeback. Certainly, the seemingly endless struggle continues. Given the sad state of affairs, uncertainty surrounds the future of Nepal football. Team Nepal’s success at the 1993 South Asian Federation Games in Bangladesh still remains the benchmark. Over the last twenty plus years, leave alone achieving the benchmark, the national team has not even come close to matching it. They had a golden opportunity to end the title drought in the last edition of the South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC) held in Kathmandu in 2013, but to squander it. The real anger, frustration is    that very little has been done by All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) under the corrupt, failed leadership of Ganesh Thapa to bolster the developme...

FIFA keeps Thapa’s corruption case pending

It is no surprise that the national football team of Nepal has taken another big tumble in the latest FIFA rankings. Obviously, this is a huge blow to Nepali football. Much to everyone’s dismay and consternation, ranked 184 th  in the world, Team Nepal     has sunk to an all time low. It does not stop there. They are ranked rock bottom in South Asia and third last in Asia. Can you believe it? Just when you think it cannot get any worse, it can. Bhutan that carried the unwanted tag of minnows of South Asian football for a very long time appears to have finally passed the baton to Nepal. Football aficionados and players are   facing   more frustration, embarrassment and humiliation than ever before, and it is a sign of how far Nepali football has fallen behind. The kind of turnaround Bhutan has made in terms of results and progress is quite remarkable. They have turned a corner largely due to genuine commitment, honesty, good gover...

Dysfunctional CAN root cause of the problem

The national cricket team of Nepal has left fans high and dry, following the latest international tournament debacle in Ireland and Scotland. It was difficult for fans to digest the team’s dismal performance, one after another. Never in their wildest imagination would they have thought that they would underperform miserably. The setback is a true reflection of the    team’s current form.  In both tournaments, it was an epic case of mediocrity and struggle. They never found their groove and ultimately fell way short of the expectations. The team lacked the competitive edge and desire to win, and had to pay dearly for committing too many mistakes and repeating the same mistakes over and over.   To add, players did not appear to be in a positive frame of mind and in the best shape physically. What is also very clear is that, poor leadership, lack of commitment by the players, questionable planning and   strategy attributed to the tea...

Nepal football conundrum continues

At the moment, I have nothing much to write about Nepal football, which may make fans feel happy, excited and optimistic. The sad part is, the scenario remains murky, uncertain and questionable, and there is no indication that will change anytime soon. I do not need to go into detail to explain the situation that is going from bad to worse with every passing day. Football enthusiasts are sick and tired over the way ANFA is being run. The readers are smart, intelligent enough to know that what ails football in Nepal and who is to blame for it. I cannot help but repeat myself. Therefore, excuse me for being repetitive. No one would dispute the fact that Nepal Football conundrum continues unabated.   That is what it is. For well over two decades, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) headed by Mr. Ganesh Thapa has been all about rampant corruption, maladministration, mismanagement and non-transparency. They have totally failed to deliver when it comes to overall footb...

Nepal must display knack for rebounding from failure

The whipping Nepal took at the 2015 ICC Twenty/20 World Cup Qualifiers in Belfast, Ireland was unexpected and beyond imagination. Nothing went right for Nepal. The competition was a fiasco in terms of performance and result. They were battered, outplayed and failed dismally. There is absolutely no excuse for the poor result. Without any iota of doubt, the team’s performance was sub-par, and no wonder they eventually paid a heavy price for their failure. Furthermore, adding fuel to the fire, Mumbai-based physiotherapist Dr. Bashir Ashai, working with the team was arrested for sexual assault and later Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) did the right thing by terminating his contract. Team Nepal entered the fray with high hopes and confidence and was touted as one of the hot contenders. However, they turned out to be merely a pale shadow of the team that performed so strongly in the final round of the 2014 edition in Bangladesh. Shockingly, unlike past, the team d...

Batting failure dooms Nepal

With three successive defeats Nepal's   extraordinary slump in the ICC World Twenty/20 Qualifiers in Belfast, Ireland has come to a disastrous end. It is end of the road for Nepal, following their latest loss to Papua New Guinea and Jersey. Obviously, batting woes spelt the death knell for the side that carried high hopes going into the competition. They needed a stable and very strong batting performance, coupled with a concerted effort of the entire team to stand any chance of making it to the final round, but it never materialized. Nepal did get off to a perfect start but failed miserably to capitalize on the good start. No wonder, they found themselves in a deep sink, they dug for themselves and were unable to pull themselves out, thus ending a very frustrating, unproductive campaign. VS USA Overcoming a run of poor form, coupled with physical exhaustion and mental fatigue, Team Nepal basked in glory at the expense of the United St...
