Nepali Youth footballers fail to make hay

Following the national football team’s puny performance   against Jordan in the World Cup  qualifiers ,  football goers attention quickly  shifted  to the First  SAFF Under-16  Championship  held  in Kathmandu. Vexed   and fed up with   the   senior team’s   lackadaisical   performance, the local    football fraternity enthusiastically looked forward to the juniors for a taste of success. It made sense because our youngsters have consistently   performed   in    various age group   competitions with   considerable   success   for the most part. The   youth teams have had quite a few success stories over the years. That said, however, there have been let-ups   in their performance lately, and the road to success has gotten bumpy as it can get.    Every   ti...

Nepali Colts fly high in Ireland

Good    bye    Ireland.   See    you    Australia next year. This    is    the     success story of Nepal’s   Under- 19 cricketers in the World Cup    qualifiers    that     wrapped up in Ireland recently.   At    a     time     when     there is so much    gloom and doom in    Nepali    sports, our young    cricketers    have proven that all is not lost. That     is one    heck     of     an accomplishment    and     at least keeps     our     sporting dreams alive. Our     young     colts triumph was compelling and powerful. In    the    ten team competition with 12 points they finished a commendable second    behind Scotland. They concluded the event ...

Nepal's struggle in international football continues

The national    football    team    of    Nepal    mediocre    World     Cup     qualifier     run     finally     ended, following a    hard fought 1-1 draw against Jordan in Kathmandu recently. After being blown away by the Jordanians in the   first   leg,   Nepal   did make   a tremendous fight back to hold   the mighty   opponent   to   a draw   much   to the delight of the packed stadium who braved the heavy   downpour. The team deserves      a round of applause    for     their    fighting spirit and positive attitude despite the massive     setback    in     the     first leg. The matter of truth is     with      the right kind of climate, management and    infrastructure   ...

Nepal Police trumps in lackluster Martyr's League

Let me start by congratulating Nepal Police Club for their resounding     Martyr’s league football tournament success in Kathmandu.   Though they finished    tied on points with Manang    Marsyangdhi Club, a better goal difference enabled them to claim the title. Not many expected the cops to rebound strongly and take charge of the proceedings as they did from the word go. They played consistently    and    maintained    the pole position all the way through the three month long competition. Despite       the last match loss to Manang Marsyangdhi    Club (MMC) the departmental side was at the top of their game over all. They handled crunch matches intelligently and    steamrolled    weak    opposition     to maintain their domination. Prior to start of the league the champion club of the country    had gone through a lean phase and failed to win ...

ANFA makes mockery of Nepali football

Kudos to   our national football team   for   their   World Cup qualifier   triumph against East Timor held in the capital   recently.  The   outcome   puts   Nepal in the   second round   against Jordan. The host won the double leg   clash in contrasting fashion.  Although   they   won a hard fought 2-1 victory in the first match but   was   in total command in their 5-0 win in the second.  Overall, it was easy going for the boys   against minnows   East Timor. After almost a decade   our national team   participated in the World Cup qualifier, and more importantly   they   carved out a historical victory. Some   may argue that East Timor ranked far behind Nepal in   FIFA rankings never   posed a serious threat. And their ...

FIFA: A citadel of politics & corruption

For an outsider like me who has followed the game of football long enough, the re-election of Seep Blatter to the highest post of FIFA, football’s world governing body did not    baffle     me a bit. I    always    believed that       football     highest governing     body     was a citadel of politics governed by executives turned bureaucrats and supported by     their cronies.   From 2007 to 2010 FIFA generated whopping revenue to the amount of $4.2 billion, largely from selling the global commercial rights to the World Cup.   In 2010 right before the crucial FIFA election each member football association was granted a one off payment of $550,000 to finance football activities. Over the   years   it   has   been   a   give and take   working relation between FIFA and    national football associations( NFA). High ranking FIFA executi...

Martys Memorial League Football: A drag for teams

The Martyrs Memorial First Division League Football tournament   in full swing in the capital is not generating the kind of excitement one   hotly anticipated. So far  spectators have  witnessed  a series  of  dull and drab encounters. Over all  it has been a low -key  affair in terms  of  teams’ performance and fans response. Most matches have been played in front of  empty gallery and  playing  standards has left much to be desired. Barring a few the majority of participants  seemed inadequately prepared for the tournament. Only a few weeks  old  but the 18 team league  has  produced  a string of  surprises already.  Only  New Road  Team (NRT) and Nepal Police (NP)  have managed a perfect record. As of now NRT  with 15 points occupies the pole position from five outings, and  NP  is in  sixth place with 12 points from four matches. Hima...
