Let me start by congratulating Nepal Police Club for their resounding     Martyr’s league football tournament success in Kathmandu.   Though they finished    tied on points with Manang    Marsyangdhi Club, a better goal difference enabled them to claim the title. Not many expected the cops to rebound strongly and take charge of the proceedings as they did from the word go. They played consistently    and    maintained    the pole position all the way through the three month long competition. Kudos to   our national football team   for   their   World Cup qualifier   triumph against East Timor held in the capital   recently.  The   outcome   puts   Nepal in the   second round   against Jordan. The host won the double leg   clash in contrasting fashion.  Although   they   won a hard fought 2-1 victory in the first match but   was   in total command in their 5-0 win in the second.  Overall, it was easy going for the boys   against minnows   East Timor. For an outsider like me who has followed the game of football long enough, the re-election of Seep Blatter to the highest post of FIFA, football’s world governing body did not    baffle     me a bit. The Martyrs Memorial First Division League Football tournament   in full swing in the capital is not generating the kind of excitement one   hotly anticipated. So far  spectators have  witnessed  a series  of  dull and drab encounters. Over all  it has been a low -key  affair in terms  of  teams’ performance and fans response. Most matches have been played in front of  empty gallery and  playing  standards has left much to be desired. Barring a few the majority of participants  seemed inadequately prepared for the tournament. Only a few weeks  old  but the 18 team league  has  produced  a string of  surprises already.  Only  New Road  Team (NRT) and Nepal Police (NP)  have managed a perfect record. Speaking of international sporting events    held in Nepal, Surya Nepal Masters Golf Championship    instantly    hits    my mind.   Whether    you agree or    not ,   this is     one    great     spectacle     played    out before us     every year. I understand     golf     is unappealing    to most in Nepal, however, the    local    golfing     fraternity   is     doing what it takes to   promote and   develop the sport.
