Men’s cricket team looking to redeem themselves in Premier Cup in Malaysia
Following the men’s national cricket team of Nepal’s hugely disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup League 2 One Day International tri-series against the Netherlands and Namibia in the Netherlands recently, there has been changes in the team’s captaincy and lineups.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) handed over the captaincy to spin maestro Sandeep Lamichhane who retained the captain position
,replacing Rohit Paudel.
Prominent names Kushal Bhurtel, Sompal Kami,Kushal Malla, Bhim Sarki and Binod Bhandari have been axed from the squad.
On the other hand, finding their way back into the team are Arjun Kumal, Dev Khanal, Ishan Pandey, Basir Ahmed and Sher Malla.
Lamichhane, who has plenty of experience of captaincy, regained the position after four years. Then he captained both the ODI and Twenty20 squads.
Now he is the captain of the ODI team only.Allrounder Dipendra Singh Airee, current skipper of the Twenty20 side remains in charge.
Lamichhane’s captaincy will be tested in the ACC Premier Cup One Day International starting on August 30th,2026 in Malaysia with so much at stake.
He faces quite a challenge to deliver the much desired results to safeguard the team’s ODI status, win the crucial World Cup League 2 playoff qualification round and qualify for the 2027 Asia Cup.
In the upcoming Premier Cup ODI they stand a pretty good chance to bounce back, find their winning form and redeem themselves.
The tournament has immense significance with the top finishers qualifying to the 2027 Asia Cup.
More importantly, should they come out victorious, it will provide them the momentum for the World Cup League 2 playoff round.
In the ten team competition,Team Nepal is in Group A alongside Bahrain, Hongkong,Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
In the opening match on August 31st they will clash against Bahrain.Keeping in view Nepal’s record against the opponents in the group, they are poised to be group winners and make it to the knockout stage.
That said, they have to perform at their very best and must not underestimate their opponents and take victory for granted.
A solid consistent collective effort, coupled with individual brilliance is a must for them to achieve success.
In order for the team to be in an advantageous position and ease pressure on bowlers, the batting has to be rock solid and consistent throughout the competition.
The batters must put in a highly improved and dominant performance. They have to fully apply themselves, stay focused and resort to disciplined and technically sound batting in every match.
They must make every effort to cancel out the questions over the team’s brittle, unpredictable and mediocre batting.
It’s a big opportunity for young emerging and aspiring batters who are keenly looking forward to making a lasting impression in international cricket. They have to be fully committed, disciplined, confident ,razor focussed, resilient, possess a positive mindset and be technically sound.
Foremost, in order to justify their selection to the team in place of regular batters, they must take their talent and skill to the next level. It will help them make an impactful presence and cement their place in the team.
Since expectations are high, they have to rise to the occasion and make the most out of the chance by fully unlocking their batting potential.
The selectors have to give them chances adequately to prove themselves to everyone. Dropping them from the playing eleven, following their mediocre performance or not meeting the expectations in one match will not be fair and makes little sense.Their overall performances have to be assessed and evaluated from at least two to three matches.
It was a huge mistake on part of the selectors by totally overlooking the much talked about emerging batting sensation Arjun Kumal, who did not play in a single game in the World Cup League 2 tri-series in the Netherlands despite poor batting performances by established batters.
Likewise, the bowlers have to dish out quality bowling in order to have a grip on the proceedings and increase the team’s chances of winning matches throughout the tournament.
Both pacers and spinners have to bowl with utmost confidence, consistency, accuracy, effectiveness, precision and mastery.
They must bear in mind that there is no room for unforced errors, technical flaws, insipidness, loss of confidence and focus. The tournament provides some of the upcoming young bowlers who have retained their place in the playing squad the chance to prove themselves an asset to the team.
Skipper Lamichhane must lead by example and effectively execute his leadership responsibilities on the pitch when it comes to bowling, batting and fielding strategies and tactical decisions. He has to keep players morale high in both victory and defeat.
