We can pull through this tragedy as a country
The national tragedy of epic
proportion brought upon us by the
killer earthquake is so tragic, profound and earth shattering.
My heart sinks at the sight of
the devastation left behind by the massive earthquake.
The enormity of the human
tragedy has been simply crushing. I am at a loss for words.
The loss of precious lives in
thousands, decimation of entire villages, wide spread destruction of
properties, infrastructures and national heritage sites is an utter catastrophe
beyond imagination.
Words cannot describe the
grief, agony, anguish and pain I feel through. I am traumatized, crushed and
shattered by the destructive force of nature, which has caused so much
devastation and chaos.
It is very obvious that we
are vulnerable and find ourselves at the mercy of natural calamities that is
beyond our control.
Apart from taking
precautionary measures and preparing ourselves logistically for disasters of this nature, we can do
nothing.
There is mounting evidence,
we are woefully unprepared to cope with the aftermath of natural disasters.
The government’s emergency
response and relief to the disaster has been pathetic.
As a matter of fact, the
government was completely caught off-guard by the disaster and took them awhile
for an organized official response.
We will have to wait and see,
how the government carries out the relief, reconstruction and renovation work
in the days ahead.
The excessive presence of red
tape makes us seriously doubt over the ability of the government to execute its
duties.
The global response to the
disaster has been overwhelming in terms of aids.
Words of support, sympathy
and aids have been pouring in from all over the world.
The Non- Resident Nepali organization, various other Nepali groups,
students and individuals across the world has done a fabulous job raising funds
for earthquake victims.
On the home front, the
contribution made by individuals, government agencies, non -government
organizations, business houses and many others have been noteworthy.
Our own “Goal Nepal” has
joined hands with “Aashraya “ to construct
temporary homes in worst hit
areas of Sindhupalchowk.
The sport fraternity was
rocked and devastated by the death of its own loved ones. They are grieving the
loss of three judokas, two karatekas, a
cricketer, a volleyball coach and a sport journalist.
The community has been
actively involved in relief aid work. Athletes’ (from all disciplines)
unyielding commitment to help victims of the earthquake is highly appreciable.
Footballers of past and
present, football aficionados in and outside of the country are doing their bit
to help victims through fund drives.
A good number of national
players are involved with the clean –up efforts and have lent a much needed
helping hand.
The Nepali community’s show
of solidarity and support for the victims is incredible and amazing.
Real Madrid’s star Cristiano Ronaldo has become the most
high profile player to make a whopping 5 million pounds donation to the
victims.
More importantly, he has appealed
fans to help the victims through
Facebook and Twitter.
The survivors of the
earthquake, especially in far-flung
areas where accessibility is very limited
are in desperate need of basics like food, shelter and clothes.
My heart goes out to the
families who have lost their loved and dear ones. The loss is irreparable and
there is no bigger loss.
I am confident that the
bereaved families will garner courage, confidence, and strength and will power
to cope with the cruel fate that is so difficult to overcome.
The departed souls will
always remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Those who survived the near
-death ordeal must stay strong and put on a brave front, despite the adversity.
Without a shadow of a doubt,
the path to recovery is going to be arduous, long, challenging and grinding.
Long as we are united and the
government is honestly committed to its responsibilities, we will pull through
this colossus disaster.
