National players and Clubs have to step up pressure on ANFA

Crest- fallen football   goers across the country   finally   had plenty of reasons to be   happy. The   Under -16   football team’s   success at   the   AFC   U-16 Group C qualifiers   in Kathmandu was the last moment   of relief for the entire Nepali football fraternity. The talented   side performed creditably and   qualified   for the final round of the competition. The   good result   comes, following   the senior national team’s    big setback   at the SAFF Championship. Team Nepal   led by upcoming youngster Bimal   Gharti   Magar topped the group with two wins and a draw.  They got off to a rousing   start   by registering   an impressive victory over   Bahrain, bounced back to hold Iraq...

ANFA responsible for country's football woes

The national   football team of Afghanistan proved beyond any reasonable   doubt that they are the new face of South Asia. They derailed six time champions India   to lift the South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC) that concluded in Kathmandu   recently. The Afghans   put   on a sterling performance and truly deserved the trophy. The winners   only   in their second SAFFC appearance showed to everyone what   they are capable of. One thing is certain; they have progressed by leaps and bounds, over the course of a few years. Their strong show comes as   a big surprise, considering the fact that it is one of the most war ravaged nations in the world. As expected, the sport   sector   in   Afghanistan   has been   badly hit   by   the   war and it is   worse off th...

Another missed opportunity for Nepal

A  fiercely  partisan   crowd  of about 25,000 plus  were left shell -shocked,  following   Team Nepal’s   dramatic  and  painful   exit  from the South Asian Federation Football Championship  in Kathmandu. Dejected home supporters were in   stunned   disbelief   at what they   witnessed. They had thronged   the stadium with high hopes and expectations. It was suppose to be a night of wild   jubilations and celebrations, instead   an eerie   atmosphere   of sadness and gloom hung over Dasarath Rangashala at the end of play. I felt/ feel   so   sorry   for   local fans. They packed the stadium for every home game and rallied around the team until the end. Their   support was simply incredible and overwhelming and meant a lot   to the tea...

SAFF Championship: A dog fight in the offing

The highly anticipated South Asian Federation Football Championship is   around the corner. The excitement   is mounting up   and gradually reaching its crescendo.  Football goers in the country   are in the grip of   football fever. As always, home supporters have high hopes despite the national team’s poor run in international football. The team under Coach Stefanowski gets yet another chance to redeem   themselves. There is one question that   has been floating around   for nearly 20 years. The million dollar question is: Can the hosts finally break the ice? And the answer is yes. I believe they can, provided they play   total   football throughout the competition. Besides, lets us not forget   a strong   team effort is a must which is a cornerstone to success. The South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC) is   in it...

Another chance for Nepali footballers to prove themselves

The national football team of Nepal gets yet another big opportunity to break a   20 year old jinx that   has    got them bogged down into   mediocrity. There is desperateness in the atmosphere and irredeemably   frantic   desire to succeed on part of the team. Anguished and frustrated fans have waited far too long to see   their   side   corner the elusive glory. How long more do   they have to wait? The answer is pretty simple. Just wait and see. Since the gold   winning performance in the South Asian Federation Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1993, Nepal has gone sans a championship success to date, a fact I have always reminded and keep reminding   football goers.   On the eve of the South Asian Federation Football Championship (SAFFC), obviously, there is a common question   on everyone’s mind “Will Nepal  be abl...

Nepal squanders massive opportunity in football

No question, it was a jaw- dropping defeat for Nepal in the highly anticipated final game of the 2nd Under-16 South Asian Federation Football Championship   held in Kathmandu. The shock 0-1   reversal   the home side suffered at the hands of India was a huge setback and a devastating blow. As a result, Nepal’s international trophy drought continues unabated, unfortunately. The 10,000 plus   boisterous partisan crowd braved the rain, hoping to celebrate victory but   were left dejected, frustrated and infuriated at the end of the day. I understand emotions run high among fans. At the same time, we must learn to accept defeat gracefully and respect opponents regardless of the outcome.  It is very important that we maintain civility, orderly environment and not vilify and demonize opponents. The talented 15 year old Jerry Lalrinzula from Mizoram   shattered the dreams of the hosts  ...

Cricketer Paras Khadka leads by example

In recent days, Paras Khadka, captain of the national cricket team of Nepal has frequently been in the news for his cricketing    sojourn laced with achievement galore that effortlessly arouses interest of sport aficionados. Not surprisingly, he has become   a darling   sort of figure for the    news media. The kind   of attention   he has generated and attracted, no doubt, is phenomenal and makes me truly believe that he is one of the most talked about   and sought after athletes in the country, at the moment. He is not even half way through his   triumphant career but   already his accomplishments   outdo his six feet plus towering   frame. The twenty-five year old   resident of Kathmandu has in a way transfixed and galvanized the media world by his sheer cricketing brilliance, genius and prowess. No wonder he is so popular...
