Chance to end championship drought goes begging for Nepal

Image
The men’s national cricket team of Nepal   squandered a  huge opportunity to win the Twenty20 International Tri-series,which concluded in Glasgow,Scotland on Friday. Australian Head coach Stuart Law looking for his first championship title was unfulfilled as his team failed to deliver the knockout punch when it mattered most. Having gotten the better of  the hosts Scotland in the first meeting  in the series, they went  into the crucial second match against them with  high morale and psychological advantage. They were  aware that  success was within reach and  had a chance to end their  tour of Scotland on a triumphant note. Disappointingly for the team and their legion of supporters world wide it didn’t materialize as they faced a 34- run defeat.   The  three sides were tied on points, following Nepal’s defeat. The teams ended the series with 2 wins and 2 losses each. The winners of the three-way tie was deter...

Ace spinner Lamichanne spins Nepal to victory over Scotland

Image
Spin maestro Sandeep Lamichhane produced a  match winning performance to guide Nepal to  a  thrilling two wicket victory against the hosts Scotland in the Twenty20  Tri-series in Glasgow, Scotland. In breezy conditions, the decision to  bowl first after winning the toss narrowly paid off  for the winners at the end of the day. The  Nepali bowlers  excelled and put in quite a  show. They rose to the occasion, delivering an excellent performance, which ultimately paved the way for their team’s victory. Ace  leg -spinner  Lamichhane was the pick of the bowlers. He was outstanding and  bowled brilliantly throughout. When he was brought into the attack,he did not let  Karan KC( 2 wickets), Dipendra Singh Airee(2 wickets ) and Lalit Rajbhansi’s( 1 wicket) good work go to waste as he effectively built on the foundation laid by them. He proved himself to be a potent bowler. He mixed experience, accuracy, guile, deceptive fl...

Laos upsets Nepal in Asian Cup Qualifiers

Image
The men’s national football team of Nepal looking for their first win took a big  tumble in the men’s AFC Asian  Cup football  qualifiers Group  F held  in Laos recently. Head coach Matt Ross' boys  suffered  a  disappointing, frustrating and unexpected 1-2 defeat at the hands of hosts Laos who are 15 places below Nepal in the FIFA World rankings. Speaking of  rankings, in my opinion it doesn't really matter. A winning performance matters more than anything at the end of the day.The outcome once again exposed Nepal's vulnerabilities.    The  Australian coach  had to endure a second  defeat  since he took over the national team. As things stand, the scenario is far from rosy for him,and he now faces quite a challenge to turn the tide. Considering the head to head record between the two sides,Nepal enjoyed a clear edge over Laos.  Prior to this match, in the last six meetings between the two,Nepal ha...

Image
In a tight finish Nepal bounced back to prevail over  the Netherlands by  16 runs in the last over of their final game of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Dundee,Scotland. Invited to bat first openers Kushal Bhurtel and Anil Sah  failed to give the team a good start. Thanks largely to the middle order batters, they finished their 50 overs with a fighting total of 236 for 9. Skipper Rohit Paudel, seeking a big knock ended up scoring a handy 35 runs ,which included  a single six. In fact he played a sedate innings and scored 35 off 60 balls. He resorted to a cautious  approach and batted responsibly throughout.   He joined  Bhim Sharki after opener AnilSah  departed for 2 runs with the total  at 29 for 2. The situation required him  to occupy  the crease as long as possible, steady and anchor the innings. Not  risking his wicket, he rightly avoided playing big shots and was content with 1s and 2s. He ...
